Vitesse Oblige

We found the only surviving copy of one of Jacques Doillon's first films in 1970 and you will see this film at the 2nd edition of the French Riviera Motorcycle Film Festival. This is one of the rare times when Christian Ravel, rising star of the speed of this era appears on the screen. He will be killed the following year during the Belgian Grand Prix at Francorchamps. We also see the great Eric Offenstadt aka "Pepe". They were both Kawasaki factory pilots.


The Director - Jacques Doillon

A kid  fan of western movies, high school student dazzled by the discovery of the films of Bresson and Dreyer, Jacques Doillon, from a modest background, believes that the world of the 7th art is inaccessible to him, and connects odd jobs. While there is a career as an insurer, he is doing a six-month internship in a film laboratory. He was soon called upon as assistant editor, on films by Robbe-Grillet or Reichenbach. From the end of the 60s, parallel to his activity of editor, he turns several documentaries of command, on subjects as varied as the circuits of motorcycle or the peasant world.

 

The first real short film by Jacques Doillon, "On ne se dit pas tout entre époux" (1971), is the adaptation of a comic of Gébé. The filmmaker and cartoonist of "Charlie Hebdo" continue their collaboration with the feature film "L'an 01", film-manifest impregnated with the spirit of May 68, shot in black and white and 16 mm, which is based on the utopian idea: "What if we all stepped aside?" In 1974, he signed a second film more personal, "Les Doigts dans la tête", on the mishaps and professional sentimental of an apprentice baker, greeted by François Truffaut, and by a critic who then hastily forges about him the concept of "new natural".

 

When Maurice Pialat declines the offer of Claude Berri to turn "Un sac de billes", it is still Truffaut who suggests to the producer to engage Doillon. After this commercial success, the director launches himself into more singular projects, realizing in 1978 both "La Femme qui pleure" and "La Drôlesse" (Prix du Jeune cinéma at Cannes in 1979), two films representative of a work that favors studies. Couple in crisis and exploring the world of childhood and adolescence. If he likes to turn beginners (among whom the future stars Juliette Binoche and Judith Godrèche), this demanding author also works with confirmed actors, which he pushes in their entrenchments by multiplying the catch. Jane Birkin, her companion for twelve years, heroine of three films including "La Pirate", closed camera that shakes the Croisette in 1984, or the tandem Isabelle Huppert-Beatrice Dalle (The Vengeance of a Woman, 1988).
